There is such a huge variety of ever evolving products for your hair on the market, all claiming to be better than the rest.

But what are they all actually used for and why?

As a hair extension consultant, a question that I am asked regularly is  ”What product shall I use on my hair?”

Unfortunately the answer is not as straight forward as you nor I would like it to be. Every individual person’s hair is different, and what works on one person’s hair may not be great for another.  So I have decided to write a few blogs advising you, on what I believe is the best all round product and how they should be used.

To begin with I am explaining what type of styling products there are available to buy, and what they are used for.

Hair Spray

Hair spray is a common cosmetic product that is sprayed onto hair to keep it stiff or to hold it in a certain style. ( It can also be dispensed from a pump) Hair sprays can be an absolute godsend when you have been spending the past hour perfecting your hair and you now have it looking great. It will hold it in that style during the day and evening. Without it we would never be able to wear our hair in the styles that we love.

There are different types of hair sprays on the market, that are all tailored to different types of hair that want alternative style’s . They will be graded in different strengths of hold ranging from a flexibility mist to a maximum hold. If you spend a little more money they can also offer other benefits such as some can be combed out at the end of the day, and other hair sprays can add shine to your hair. Higher-octane sprays are going to give you longer-lasting, stiffer hold and volume while locking out humidity. A flexible spray gives you more control and hair that still feels soft to the touch and gives you movement, volume and bounce.

Volume boost and Thickening spray

These products add both volume and fullness to your own hair.  If your hair is particularly fine or limp these products are great because they will not weigh your own hair down. The thickening moose penetrates your own hair and using the moister, it expands the hair itself making it fuller and thicker. Whilst the volume boost will lift your hair from the root holding it higher which gives your hair instant volume and fullness.

Tip

If you have very fine hair I would recommend you stay well clear of any heavy serums or waxes as they will be far too heavy on your own hair and weigh it down making it look drab and flat.

Curl Shaping Spray

This spray is great for curly or unruly hair that needs a little taming. It will define waves, or curls and reduces frizz or fly away hairs. I would recommend this product for medium to thick, curly or wavy hair. Always err on the side of caution when you are applying it, as this sort of product sticks your hair together. Too much and it will look clumpy however just enough and it will look sort, healthy, and shiny.

Styling Lotions and Creams.

Theses products are brilliant for when you are blow drying, curling, or heat styling your own hair. Not only do they protect your own hair against the damaging effects of heat styling but they also provide a soft hold, volume and shine for your hair. I recommend this product for anyone that has any layers or a particular style cut into your hair, as it will accentuate your cut perfectly. Your hair is left looking fabulous with lots of movement and feeling like you haven’t got any product on it at all.

Wax

Wax can be brilliant for funky short hair styles. It is great for pulling out sections of your own hair to add style to textured, spiky, choppy hair types. I only recommend this for thick and short hair because the wax itself is very thick and heavy. In fact it is the heaviest product that you could ever put on your hair to style it. You only need the tiniest bit to add texture to your hair, so I recommend you get a pea sized amount and first rub that in between your fingers. Then pull it just over the ends of the hair that you want to lift in.

Gel

Hair gel is very similar to hair spray because you can get it in an assortment of strengths and it is a hair styling product that is applied to wet hair to aid the styling process. I would recommend hair gel for people with thick, short hair. (If your hair is fine  it will be too heavy) You can also use it for scrunching your hair, a styling term that refers to bunching up strands of hair to boost any natural or chemical curl or wave in the hair. It will hold your hair, defining and lifting any kinks or curls you have.

Mousse

Hair mousse is awesome because it is so light and versatile. You can use it in wet or dry hair to define, hold or style. It can be used for both short and long hairstyles, with thick of thin hair, and is available in a selection of different holds. A personal favorite of mine is to run some through my hair prior to blow drying to add volume and hold in the style. Alternatively it is great for scrunching hair or defining curls. Unlike gel you can also brush mousse out which comes in very handy if you want to change your daytime  look for the an evening out.

Shine Serum

I don’t care how perfect your hair is, I am a true believer in shine serum and I use it daily. Whether your hair is thick, thin, dry, greasy, curly or straight there will be a serum suited for you. It nourishes your hair whilst forming a protective layer over the ends to prevent any breakage, and protecting the cuticle layers of your hair – which delivers maximum shine. I especially recommend this if you have broken, fizzing or coarse hair as it will soften and protect your hair whilst keeping it looking soft and frizz free.

Anti Frizz Cream 

Anti frizz cream is a lighter and softer version of the serum.  It is creamier and because of that it is far less likely to weigh your hair down. I recommend this for anyone that has very thin or fine hair, as it will do the same wonderful job as serum but is better suited. You can use this product with any of the styling sprays or creams as well just make sure you apply this first using a pea size amount on towel damp hair. Rub it from the middle down to the shaft of your hair for full effect.

Choosing the right type of hair extension is crucial. While synthetic hair extensions are often cheaper, this does not mean they are a good bargain. More and more salons are turning to human hair extensions because they are higher quality, last longer, and look natural. There are several different types of human hair used for extensions, each with advantages and disadvantages. The three most common types are European, Chinese, and Indian. Salons might use one or all three of these hair types. You will need to ask before you make a final decision.

European hair is the highest quality. It can come from all areas in Europe however the finest hair comes from Russia. Although this hair is the strongest it is also thin enough to blend in well, even if your hair is extremely fine. European human hair extensions blend in well with most hair types and can be dyed to match any colour. You should not attempt to colour your new hair extensions as this could result in unnecessary damage.

Indian women are known for having beautiful hair that is shiny, straight, and strong.  This type of hair is naturally dark, so suppliers will need to spend time bleaching and re-colouring it before it reaches you. This can result in the hair needing a little more aftercare once you have them fitted. Indian human hair extensions are naturally thicker and slightly courser so blend well if you naturally have very thick hair. Many Indian women have virgin hair that is in great condition. You will need to make sure that your Indian human hair extensions are top quality. The hair will need to be one length and arranged so that all hair runs in the same direction.

The lower class of hair is typically from the surrounding countries in Asia typically China. This type of hair is extremely thick, dark, and coarse. Asian hair needs to go through several different treatments to strip its colour and reduce its thickness. The hair is then dyed and coated with silicone to make it shiny again. Unfortunately, this type of hair can resemble synthetic hair because of its texture and plastic-looking shine. Asian hair is also harder to style than other types. If you are thinking about getting human hair extensions, make sure to ask your stylish which types of hair they use. Many stylists will carry several different types and can use whichever type you prefer.
